Description
Abnormally large thermal cracks were accidentally observed on surfaces of rolls by continuous casting of aluminum. Effects of quenching and tempering condition on resistance to heat checking and high temperature strength of an alloy roll steel was investigated to settle the problem. When an austenitizing temperature is kept constant, the largest resistance to heat checking of the roll steel is obtained in a tempering temperature range between 450°C and 550°C. The resistance to heat checking and the high temperature strength increases with increasing austenitizing temperature.
