Effects of various sulfur-containing compounds on the zinc stearate/calcium stearate soap induced thermal stabilization of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) were investigated by colorimetry. t-Nonylmercaptane, dithioglycol, β-mercaptopropionic acid, and thiourea markedly enhanced thermal stabilization of PVC containing zinc stearate/calcium stearate soap, while octylmercaptane, di (n-octyl) sulfide, a-mercaptopropionic acid, and 2-ethylhexylmercaptoacetate did not exhibit measurable enhancements in the stability. IR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the sulfur-containing compound-metal soap-PVC mixtures indicated that the sulfur-containing compounds, which were effective as additives, formed complexes with zinc chloride deriving from the metal soap. Such complexes were not observed for the sulfur-containing compounds which were less effective. The synergetic effect between the sulfur-containing compounds and the metal soap was ascribed to mask the excessive zinc chloride by the sulfur-containing compounds.
