Abstract
To examine the perfomances of a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) in navigation, the authors carried out experiments aboard the training ship HOKUSEI-MARU. Ship speed data and fuel oil consumption of the main engine were examined at various CPP blade angles and propeller speed. Two approaches to control ship speed Were evaluated from the view point of fuel economy of the main engine. Results indicate that fuel oil consumption can be reduced without reducing ship speed. In the case of this ship, fuel oil consumption can be reduced by 8% under optimum conditions.
