Description
Purpose: The function of muscles is often determined only in an anatomical position. However, the muscle torque can vary according to the joint angle. The aim of this study was to clarify the change in the hip flexion-extension muscle torque capacity according to the hip flexion-extension angle by using a mathematical model. <br>Methods: The flexion-extension torque of 15 hip muscles was calculated from the physiological cross-sectional area, pennation angle, moment arm, and fiber length. The torque was calculated from 20° of extension to 90° of flexion by 10°. <br>Results: Flexion torque of the iliopsoas increased with hip flexion, and preserved on hip extension, while the peak torque of the rectus femoris was obtained at 20° of flexion. The extension torque generated by the hamstrings increased with hip flexion; however, on hip extension, the extension torque was mainly generated by the lower gluteus maximus. As the hip flexed, torque directions by most of the adductor muscles changed from flexion to extension. <br>Conclusion: The findings of this study would be useful to estimate the function of a specific muscle at a joint angle different from that of the anatomical position.
