Description

Oriental lacquer (Urushi) is mainly composed of urushiol, and is usually cured at room temperatureby taking a long time with an enzyme which is called laccase. In this study, urushiol was extractedfrom oriental lacquer with acetone and was tried to cure it by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The urushiol was cured quickly even if the UV irradiation was carried put in the low power. Thecolor of the cured film became light, bringing about very favorite result for lacquer wares. The curingmechanism of the urushiol was discussed based on the infrared (IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). We concluded that the curing reaction is a radical polymerization with the oxidationin very shallow surface.
