Description

This study examined the intrapersonal processes underlying conversational behavior based on the inner state from the point of view of conversational ability. In study 1, participants were required to rate peer conversational abilities and report their own social skills. seven participants who are good at conversation(high group) and 11 participants who are not (low group) were extracted from all the participants. In study 2, the semi-structured interview of the inner state during conversation was conducted on both groups. The responses in the interviews were classified into 11 categories. Whereas, in the high group most remarks participants made fell under the categories, i.e., "taking account of partner's inner state and situation" and "immediacy", in the low group most remarks participants made fell under different categories, i.e., "dislike of conversation" and "insensitive". Quantification method of the third type was conducted on these categories. Finally, a decision making process model of conversational behavior which contains two stages of "situational judgment" and "cost-reward calculation" was proposed.
