A Study on the Factors Determining People's Health

Abstract

Nowadays, people are becoming to be more interested in their health than ever. The present study was carried out to clarify valid factors determining people's health. Sixty items related to the mode of life were used as explanatory variables. As for as males are concerned, twelve items related to life of work place were added. The questionnaire was distributed to 887 male and 893 female adults in the city of Onojo in October, 1982. And, 1222 healthy adults and 436 unhealthy ones were selected as the samlpes. The data were mainly analyzed by Hayashi's quantification theory. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Concerning about healthy persons, both male and female, it can be pointed out that first, they practice more exercises or sport activities in their daily lives, second, they have less experiences of attending hospital in the past and present, and their levels of physical, mental and social health are rather high, third, they are more satisfied with their families, work places, communities, friends and ways of life. 2. Both males and females, the variables especially related to exercise or sport, situation of health and life satisfaction are connected structually, and exert a direct or indirect influence on people's health . 3. In this analysis, the correlation ratio was considerably high (male η=.672, female η=.609) , so it could be said that the validity on selection of variables was verified to some extent. 4. The main factors determining people's health are, as for males, attending hospital in the present, level of physical health, physical impediment, quantity of exercise in work or house work, marriage and way of attending office. On the other hand, as for females, they are mainly level of physical health, level of mental health, experience of attending hospital in the past, attending hospital in the present, quantity of exercise in work or house work, marriage and occupation. 5. As for males, the factors such as environment of work place, monotony of work and noise of work place have an influence on their health, too.
