The preparation of Yield Table for MIZUNARA at Hokkaido Experimental Forest attached to the Agricultural Department of Kyushu University

In order to give some suggestions concerning treatment of MIZUNARA (Ouercus crispula Blume), at Hokkaido Experimental Forest attached to the Agricultural Department of Kyushu University, the author prepared yield table for MIZUNARA, showing the amount of production of the structural timber. The following shows the method and the result of it. 1) In order to collect the basic data of this yield table, the author studied fine natural stands of MIZUNARA by the following method and clarified the growth succession of the trees in the upper stories. (1)Number of sample plots : 46 (2) Areas of sample plots : 0.014 - 0.443 ha (3) Stand age of sample plots : 13 - 145 years 2) The author worked out the standard of the technical system of thinning as follows. Number of upper trees which is suitable for continuing annual diameter increment (3.6 mm) uniformly is assumed and based on this number of upper trees, the crown thinning is operated by the method shown in Table 2. 3) Based on the proceeding, the growth succession of upper trees of the production stand of the structural timber of MIZUNARA is forecasted as follows. (1) Mean breast height diameter : D= 0.40 + 0. 36A where, D: mean breast height diameter (cm) A: stand age (years) (2) Number of trees : $log N$ = 5.5469 -1.5712 $log A$ where, N: number of trees per ha (3) Mean tree height : $log H$= -0.4626 + 1.4098 ($log A$) - 0.2473 $($log A$)^2$ where, H: mean tree height (m) (4) Volume of stems : $log V$ = 2.7045 - 21.5000/A where, V: volume of stems per ha ($m^3$) 4) Based on above results of forecast, yield table for upper trees of MIZUNARA is prepared. This yield table is shown in Table 3.
