Abstract

Previous studies on Paul's moral reasoning have discussed his anthropology, communalism (ecclesiology), cosmology, and apocalyptic eschatology, and these works have examined the inseparable relationship between eschatology and ethics in Paul's moral reasoning. However, scholars have tended to separate theology from ethics, interpreting Paul's moral reasoning only in terms of the individual and understanding the ancient world from the viewpoint of ontological dualism, which makes a clear distinction between God and the world/the cosmos. Therefore, they have failed to pay due attention to the three interconnected contexts of Paul's moral reasoning: the individual, the community, and the cosmos. This study argues that 1 Corinthians is the best text to examine in understanding these three interconnected contexts of Paul's moral reasoning and, moreover, that the ancient etiological arguments found in Hippocrates, Empedocles, Plato, the Hellenistic philosophers, Galen, and others are helpful and heuristic in clarifying the logic of Paul's moral reasoning.
