Abstract

Issues such as injuries and poor physical health due to an incorrect or unbalanced diet have been identified in students belonging to high school athletics clubs. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the impact of dietary and lifestyle education (group and individual education) provided by Yogo teachers on dietary life and knowledge, lifestyle habits, and nutrient intake among students participating in full-time high school athletics club activities. Dietary and lifestyle education was provided six times (30 minutes each session) to 68 students belonging to the athletics club of A private high school in S. Prefecture from April to November 2019. The evaluations were carried out using a non-anonymous self-administered questionnaire-based survey containing 24 questions on dietary and lifestyle knowledge, 12 on lifestyle, and one on stages of change, as well as the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire for youth(BDHQ15y). The students were subsequently sorted into two groups, with the intervention group receiving individual education using dietary records. Comparisons were made between the results before, immediately, and 3 months after education in the group education group, and before and 3 months after the intervention in the individual education group. Group education significantly increased the mean total scores for dietary life and knowledge immediately and 3 months after compared with before education. Individual education enabled the students in the intervention group to transition to a higher stage of change and increase their intake of several nutrients. The content of this education was structured based on the actual situation of students from the standpoint of Yogo teachers. By providing group and individual education on diet in all aspects of life that is in line with students' actual situations, Yogo teachers appear to be able to improve student knowledge regarding food and dietary behavior.
