Abstract

The purpose of the study was to clarify the effective method of oral health guidance by examining the relationship between the oral health behaviors of children and their parents and the condition of the child’s oral health. Furthermore, it was to help to create an effective guidance program in the future. The subjects were 46 out of 66 children in the 5th grade of 2018 at H Elementary School in Chuo-ku, Niigata City, Niigata, who participated in the tooth brushing instruction course during the lunch break and agreed to participate in this study (28 girls, 18 boys) and their parents. One month before the start of the tooth brushing instruction course, a questionnaire survey on tooth brushing behaviors was conducted for the children and their parents. To evaluate the plaque adhesion status and gingival condition at the start of tooth brushing instruction, intraoral photographs were taken and the data were collected through the intraoral photographs before the instruction course. At H Elementary School, 23.9% of the respondents answered “I always use the hand mirror when brushing my teeth.”, which was lower than the past reports. OHI-DI was significantly lower in the dental floss-using group than in the no dental floss-using group. In addition, a significant correlation was found between the tooth brushing behaviors of children and their parents, with a focus on the use of dental floss. In the future, it will be necessary to continuously survey children and parents’ attitudes regarding oral health behaviors, and based on this, provide information on oral health to parents. It can be said that it is beneficial for the oral health of children in school age, to have their parents the correct knowledge and to keep their interest in the oral health of their children.
