Description

Most of the literature on Ashley Down's orphanage founder George Müller (1805-1898) consists in 'Hagiography' or 'Great Man.' Since Müller was a pioneering philanthropist and prominent evangelist of the 19th century, unsurprisingly, the great man's biography celebrating his achievements occupies most of it. Conversely, the depiction of Müller as a great man is prevalent, and it is difficult to obtain a realistic image. To this end, it is indispensable to organise the materials related to Müller and to critically examine them. Therefore, the related materials are classified as follows: (1) annual reports and journals, (2) autobiography, (3) Müller's preaching, (4) Müller's biography, (5) Müller's research, (6) Müller's materials online. These are valuable historical sources, and a critical historical analysis has shown that they may yield new insights from new images of Müller, especially regarding Christian social welfare and social welfare research.
