Abstract

We performed autopsies on 82 patients carrying neurological disorders, who were cared for at home or terminal care facilities until death. Home-care physicians who took care of the patients participated in presentation of 5 cases of clinical data at the clinicopathological conferences. Active concern by the home-care physicians enhanced the actuality of discussions not only on medical but also on social issues that involve patients' families and quality of home care, which were impactful to the audience of CPC. Long-term care of patients carrying neurological disorders is now shifting from hospital to home care, sometimes until the end of life. Autopsies of such home-care patients may be one of the strategies to provide opportunities to learn and increases the number of autopsies in Japan. This novel approach to sharing medical and social actualities around home care will improve the support network around each patient.
