Abstract

In the school year of 1997, the overseas student study tour was organized by total 820 schools including middle and high schools in Japan, and 141,792 students went on the study tour. The school excursion in Japan is yearly operated in 39,000 schools including elementary and high schools, and about 280 billion yen for travelling expenses was paid by 4.7 million students. It is worthy of attention that so many students learned the importance of keeping “peace” through domestic study tour to Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Okinawa. On the other hand, the domestic study tour such as mass tourism is now at the turning point. Recently the overseas student study tour has become popular, and I am afraid of its trending to be operated easily in the same way of domestic study tour. Because, there is a distinct difference between domestic and overseas study tour. Before leaving Japan, they have to think over the meaning of going abroad, and also have to recognize Japan's present position in the world. It is a must for them to have correct understanding of political and historical relations between Japan and visiting countries. I expect the students to become aware of Japanese nationals, to be well cultivated in international sense, and to awake to love of their mother country through the experience of overseas student study tour.
