Abstract

Digital coherent technology has been widely employed in long-haul fiber-optic communications. In addition, because of the high throughput and sensitivity offered by coherent detection, it is also being considered for various applications such as communications over short-reach optical fiber and free-space optical (FSO) links. In this paper, we report on the results of verifying static frequency offset, dynamic frequency offset simulating Doppler shift, laser phase noise, and long-distance optical fiber transmission characteristics using the prototype developed, focusing on tolerance to a wide range of carrier frequency and phase variations, which are issues at low symbol rates.
