Abstract

Purpose : We aimed to clarify the actual status of sports activities among survivors of malignant bone tumors in the pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) age groups in a multicenter study.

Methods : Survivors who had undergone radical surgery for primary malignant bone tumors between 2000 and 2020 at six medical institutions, and who were between the ages of 12 and 39 at the time of the survey were included. The status of sports implementation before and after the treatment was surveyed via a web-based questionnaire.

Results : Valid responses were obtained from 70 respondents. Of the 48 who were active in sports before treatment, 24 continued to play some kind of sports. A total of 30 patients (43%) were active in sports after treatment. The total weekly hours of sports activity tended to decrease with a median of 7 hours in the pre-treatment group and 3 hours in the post-treatment group. The median number of metabolic equivalents (METs), a measure of exercise intensity, was 7 in the pre-treatment group, but decreased significantly to a median of 5.75 in the post-treatment group (t-test, p=0.0044). The median weekly calorie consumption from sports was 2695 kcal in the pre-treatment group, but significantly decreased to 1140 kcal in the post-treatment group (t-test, p=0.0344).

Discussion : The frequency and intensity of sports activities tended to decrease after treatment in pediatric and AYA survivors of malignant bone tumors. It was considered important to provide information from the side of medical care providers.
