Description

We conducted a retrospective analysis of the data of 26 cases of recurrent rectal prolapse treated at our institution over a 5-year period. The patients were divided into two groups based on the surgical approach adopted: the transperineal procedure group (n=13) and the laparoscopic rectopexy group (n=13). There were significant differences between the two groups; the average age was 86.2±7.6 years in the transperineal procedure group and 76.2±10.1 years in the laparoscopic rectopexy group. The mean surgical duration was 48.2±20.7 minutes in the transperineal procedure group and 138±35.4 minutes in the laparoscopic rectopexy group. Blood loss was also significantly different, being 28.1±7.1 grams in the transperineal procedure group and 9.6±5 grams in the laparoscopic rectopexy group. The recurrence rate was 31% (4 cases) in the transperineal procedure group and 8% (1 case) in the laparoscopic rectopexy group. Multivariate analysis identified no independent risk factors for a third recurrence of the rectal prolapse. Safety of laparoscopic rectopexy was similar to that of other procedures, making it an advantageous surgical option owing to its minimally invasive nature.
