Description

This paper aims to elucidate the multilayered oppression structures and resistance encountered by two Filipino 1.5 generation immigrant women in Japan over a span of 15 years, from their early teens to late twenties, through a transnational intersectionality lens. The participants, living in “transnational families” and “international stepfamilies,” navigated everyday interactions where ethnicity, gender, class, nationality, language, and immigrant generation intersected, creating a complex matrix of domination. These oppressions led to significant personal conflicts and constraints on their educational and employment opportunities. The study also highlights the formation of neighborhood ethnic friendship networks as a form of resistance, discussing both the potential and limitations of such intimate spaces as foundational elements of their lives. Furthermore, the paper examines how these networks provided emotional and practical support, helping the participants to cope with and resist the various forms of oppression they faced. Finally, the paper discusses the significance and challenges of adopting an intersectional perspective in family studies, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of immigrant experiences and the intricate power dynamics at play.
