Description

Along the river bed of the Tama river in the Ome city, we identified 14 tephras, named CGS 1 to 6 and TMD 1 to 8 in ascending order, and described their petrographic properties including chemical compositions of volcanic glass shards. CGS2 with a thickness of 1m is a vitric tephra and correlative to HaG found in the Koma Hill and to SiG found in the Moroyama Hill. Moreover, it is clarified on the basis of estimated age, facies and petrographic properties, that CGS2 is correlative to a well-studied late Pliocene wide-spread UN-MD2 tephra, and that CGS1 just below CGS2 is correlative to Habutaki I-MT2-Arg-2 tephra just below UN-MD2 tephra. Ages of two widespread tephras estimated by previous studies are ca. 2.65Ma (UN-MD2 tephra) and 2.9Ma (Habutaki I-MT2-Arg-2 tephra). It is also estimated that the lower part of Hanno Gravel had been accumulated around 2.9-2.65Ma.
