Description
Changes in vegetation and fire disturbances occurring during the Holocene were reconstructed using fossil pollen and charcoal records from the Gudo Mire, Nakamura City, Shikoku, southwestern Japan. The chronology is determined from widely-dispersed volcanic ash and two ^<14>C datings. Three local pollen assemblage zones (GD-I to GD-III) were established based on patterns of representative taxa. In zone GD-I (ca. 10, 400 to 9, 500yr B.P.), the forests were dominated by deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus subgen. Quercus, Zelkova serrata, Carpinus, Acer, Fagus crenata, and Aesculus turbinata. Pinaceous conifers were also present, while evergreen broad-leaved canopy and sub-canopy trees, Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis and Illicium religiosum, were rather rare. In zone GD-II (ca. 9, 500 to 6, 400yr B.P.), the forests were replaced by evergreen broad-leaved forests consisting mainly of Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis, Castanopsis and Myrica rubra. The occurrences of Myrica rubra, Carpinus, Quercus subgen. Quercus, Celtis-Aphananthe and Gleicheniaceae in this zone suggest that the climate had become warmer, but was slightly unstable, and that flood disturbances increased in alluvial lowlands. In zone GD-III (ca. 6, 400yr B.P. to present), deciduous broad-leaved trees declined conspicuously, and Castanopsis and Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis widely predominated. Microscopic charcoal influx indicates that local fire disturbance was greatest during zone GD-I, remained high during the middle stage of zone GD-II, and then decreased to present.
