説明

A new radiometric titration method for determination of heavy metals, such as organic mercury, inorganic mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel, was developed in which penicillamine and cobalt-60 were used as a titrant and a non-isotopic tracer, respectively. A series of sample solution of equal volume is prepared, and the tracer is added to each solution. Penicillamine solution is added to it, and the amount of penicillamine to be added to each solution is increased stepwise. The activity of the solution is measured, after the resulted mixture is treated with cation exchange resin.
A titration curve is drawn, and its end-point is clearly observed as the jump of activity. The principle of this method is based on the facts that above mentioned metal ions form negatively charged or neutral chelates of much higher stability than cobalt, and the chelates can be separated easily from the excess of unreacting cobalt ion by ion-exchange resin. The activity then appears in the solution when the amount of penicillamine becomes excess to the amount of metal ion in the sample. The determination of 10-610-7M of organic mercury, inorganic mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel was possible, 10-5M solution of penicillamine and 10-5M of cobalt-60 solution being used within the range of pH value 8.812.
The limit of this method was discussed through the stability constant of metal chelates. Determination of mercury using mercury-203 as an isotopic tracer was also possible.
