Description

In order to establish the method of total analysis of air pollutants, application of gas chromatographic technique was studied. By use of a condensation tube packed with the grained firebricks and cooled by liquid oxygen, C2 to C6 hydrocarbons were quantitatively recovered. It was showed that the condensation in this case was based on the low temperature adsorption.
Non-condensable components, such as carbon monoxide and methane, were oxidized to CO2, trapped and determined by gas chromatography. Sulfur dioxide also could be determined together with hydrocarbons by gas chromatographic separation and removal of CO2.
The method was applied to several common samples, such as engine exhaust gas, coal stack gas, outdoor air, etc., and their typical gas chromatograms were illustrated.
