Abstract

This paper presents a new theoretical formula for estimating the maximum resistance of stumps. First, we examined the results of the investigation of a treefall area, which occurred in March, 2003 in the Funyu experimental forest of Utsunomiya University. We found that trees rotated on the earth surface point when soil was dense. Then, we worked out a theoretical model and formula for the tree motion based on a condition of soil dense (hemisphere model). Furthermore, we calculated the moment when the surrounding soil was destroyed so that we could estimate the moment of treefall. In addition, we calculated the depth of the center of rotation and found that this estimated force was very similar to the values of Onuma's empirical formula and Uemura's formula. Thus the result indicates that the proposed theoretical formula may be highly reliable.
