Description

A novel retinal circuit for edge detection, which has light adaptation in the photoreceptor layer, was constructed. The circuit compresses a large range of input intensity to a reasonable range for edge detection by making use of local light adaptation of the photoreceptor layer. The simulated result showed that the circuit covered 5 decades of light intensity keeping high spatial resolution. Due to the amplification function of the circuit, dark-intensity inputs were amplified locally so that both light intensities of the dark inputs and bright inputs became the same order in a single input image. In conclusion the circuits detected edges at the same time in a single input image that has 5 decades of light intensity.
