In order to define the changes in the protein polypeptides of the Antheraea yamamai egg during embryonic and diapause development, the protein patterns of these eggs were analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The protein of the eggs, which were obtained immediately after oviposition, were composed mainly of 7 polypeptides (A: 190-200kDa, E: 180kDa, D: 75kDa, E: 68kDa, F: 62kDa, H: 40kDa, J: 33kDa). On day 8 after oviposition, five new bands appeared in the range of 130 to 180kDa, as well as new G (44-46kDa) and I bands (36kDa) were observed with the degradation of bands E, F and H. During the diapause development, two bands between 150 and 160kDa disappeared in the eggs kept at 25°C, but remained in the eggs kept at 5°C. In the course of embryonic development after diapause termination, an abrupt change was observed in the electrophoretic patterns on day 8, after the beginning of post-diapause development. These results suggest that egg proteins may be degraded at certain specific stages during the embryonic development and diapause development.
