Lipomyces starkeyi stores a large amount of lipid as an oil globule within a cell. In this report, the size of the oil globule was measured by means of turbidimetry. Refractive index of the cell was able to be calculated by the Hart-Montroll equation from scattering spectrum which was measured with a special spectrophotometer. This refractive index was correlated to the oil globule size which changed according to the growth. On the other hand, the turbidity spectrum measured with the ordinary spectro-photometer was little related to the oil globule size. So the relation between turbidity <br>ratio (450 mμ/650 mμ) which was calculated from the turbidity spectrum and the cell size nearly agreed with the Hart-Montroll equation when the relative refractive index was 1.04. This shows that turbidity spectrum is useful to determine the size of cell and oil globule. (Received March 13, 1972)
