Description

The aim of this study is to clarify the history of TATAMI evolution including the system for its production and supply. Original evolution of Japanese TATAMI was studied from the ancient archives which tells us features of oldest existing TATAMI Process of TATAMI development and its popularization in the middle ages clarified from ancient references “EMAKI” and “NIKKOSHASAN-SHIRYO”, respectively. We understood TATAMI production and supply system by means of studying history of TATAMI craftsmen, their training schools, and regional distribution of both TATAMI manufactures and stores. Field study is also made to investigate the TATAMI manufactures and stores.
