Description

The purposes of the present study were to investigate characteristics of the stress-coping processes of junior high school students with chronic diseases who experienced school non-attendance (Experienced Group), and to find characteristics on health locus of control and self-efficacy of those students by comparing them with similar students who had not experienced school non-attendance (No-Experience Group). The results concerning stress-coping processes (cognitive appraisal, coping, perceived social support, and stress responses) were as follows: The Experienced Group's scores for perceived social support for all support sources (father, mother, siblings, teachers, friends, and hospital staff) were lower than the scores of the No-Experience Group. On the stress response scales (irritated-angry affect, physical response, depressive-anxious feeling, cognition/thought of helplessness), the scores of the Experienced Group were higher than those in the No-Experience Group. But no significant difference was found between the Experienced Group and the No-Experience Group on cognitive appraisal/coping, nor was there a significant difference between the groups on health locus of control. However, the Experienced Group's scores on self-efficacy showed a lower tendency (0.05<p<0.10) than the No-Experience Group's scores.
