Description

A group-administered attention test battery and the Japanese version of the WISC-III were used to examine the performance of 48 children and youth with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 13 with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). The participants' age range was from 6 years 9 months to 16 years 1 month. The results were as follows: The participants with ADHD showed significantly lower performance on the digit span subtest of the WISC-III, compared to the profile based on standard scores and also in contrast to the participants with PDD. The participants with ADHD also under-performed on the oto-kazoe test of sustained attention, which was included in the test battery. The participants with PDD displayed no deficits on the WISC-III in comparison to the published standard scores. They out-performed the participants with ADHD on the tests of vocabulary, immediate recall, and the scanning of the space, although the participants with PDD did not excel on these measures relative to the standard scores. The participants with PDD also displayed no deficits on the tests in the attention test battery. The present findings seem to suggest that measures of auditory short-term memory and sustained attention can discriminate between individuals with ADHD and those with PDD.
