Description

We contrived a simple and efficient method of preparing paraffin-embedded cell blocks with the use of a membrane filter (Filter cell block, MFCB). We used MFCB together with routine endometrial cytology and examined its usefulness. The study group consisted of 427 patients who visited the Gynecology Clinic of Otemae Hospital. In 72 (17%) cases which could not be diagnosed because of scanty cells on cytological smears, 24 (6%) cases could be diagnosed with the use of MFCB. In 28 (6.6%) cases in which epithelial neoplasia or related lesions were suspected, 12 (2.8%) cases were examined by endometrial curettage or using hysterectomy materials and a final histological diagnosis was made. These were 9 (2.1%) cases of endometrial hyperplasia, 2 (0.5%) cases of atypical endometrial hyperplasia and 1 (0.2%) case of endometrial cancer. This study found that the use of a membrane filter can simplity and improve the preparation of paraffin-embedded cell blocks and lead to progress in the diagnostic accuracy of screening for endometrial cancer.
