Description

In recent years, skin disease with body-wide alopecia or marked lichenification has been observed in Ryukyu wild boars (Sus scrofa riukivanus) living on Amami-Oshima island. Sarcoptic mange mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) have been detected from skin lesions on diseased animals. The disease was first detected in 1978 in Setouchicho on Amami-Oshima. It has since become widespread. The wild boars are thought to have been infected by feral Amami-Oshima pigs, on which sarcoptic mange mites have been detected.
