Description

To increase the iron content of sow's milk, sows were administered intramuscularly with dextran iron (group 1), amino acid chelate iron (group 2), and primary iron fumarate (group 3). The effect of preventing young from anemia was the greatest in group 1 when dextran iron was given twice. It was considerable in group 2 and little in group 3.<BR>There was a significant difference in growth of 4-week-old young between group 1 and the untreated control group. There was a high positive correlation between a weekly gain in body weight and a weekly mean hemoglobin value in piglets at 2 weeks of age and later. The raising rate of piglets was higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1 and the control group. It was expected to be increased by administration of an iron preparation to the dam.
