Description
It was reported that the IS levels in serous middle ear effusion were significantly high and rat IS certainly prolongated the histological inflammation of rat middle ear with OME induced by formalin-killed H. influenzae. In order to reveal the real mechanism of the histological changes, the response of macrophage to IS was examined. The effect of IS on the phagocytic activity of macrophage was not significant, however the PGE2 production of macrophage by IS treatment was considerable. These results suggest that PGE2 induced by macrophage is one of the factors of prolongation of histological inflammation of OME which is caused by formalin-killed H. influenzae.
