Abstract

This paper will focus mainly on campus reconstruction after the 1999 Ji-Ji earthquake in Taiwan, through document analysis and field research. 54 reconstructed elementary schools in Nan-Tou County (City) were selected for this research (New Campus). The reconstruction planning is analyzed from the planners' point of view. Literature analysis and field study methods were used to discuss the planning of the schoolyards, buildings and campus outdoor spaces. The research will be discussed in several articles. This particular article will directly focus on the classification of campus planning. This article is summarized in the following 3 points: 1) Some schools should have more building area on each campus. Some of the schools are under the standard area and tend to have a site area too large in proportion to the size of school. There are also schools that do not meet the standard total floor area per student, meaning that each student does not have enough space. 2) Campus arrangement of these schools can be categorized into 5 different types. Collinear and atrium types are traditional arrangements, while deploy, series, and centroclinal are newer arrangements. The majority of the schools are still traditionally arranged, but there are also a significant number of schools with the more innovative arrangements. 3) Some of these reconstructed schools are influenced by the concept of opening schools to the community. However, these schools tend to be located in country or mountain areas. Although some schools were constructed with low hedge walls or an opened gate, more schools, especially those in urban areas, still use an enclosure wall with closable gate for safety and protection reasons.
