Description

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare disease that should be well understood as a benign breast disease, because there are reported cases of a mastectomy being performed based on misdiagnosis of breast cancer. We experienced eight cases of GM, and we considered them along with 63 reported cases in Japan.
All cases presented breast tumors on one side, and skin redness was found in 22 cases (31%), the pain and/or tenderness were found in 46 cases (65%). Eighteen cases were diagnosed as suspicion of clinical breast cancer, and mastectomy was performed in seven cases. The treatments for GM included drainage, surgical operation, and steroid therapy. This was effective in 18 of 19 cases who had administered prednisolone (PSL), and the tumors of six cases disappeared. In the other four cases extirpation was performed, because of relapsed after PSL ended. In seven cases there was spontaneous recovery.
We propose the treatment after GM is diagnosed, should be passage observation or drainage is tried first, and steroid therapy can be selected when conditions worsen. The surgical therapy is only selected at the end.
