Description
The purpose of this research was to examine the present conditions and issues concerning foot care in Japan. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the medical staff involved in diabetes education and foot care at educational institutions certified by the Japan Diabetes Society. Questionnaires were sent by mail to a total of 399 institutions, and 278 completed questionnaires were received (69.7%). In 84% of the institutions that indicated that foot care was being provided, the foot care was performed by “nurses,” “physicians”, and “dermatologists,” in descending order. Strong correlations between type of medical profession and type of foot care were seen in regard to some questionnaire items, including “inspection”, “treatment”, and “care”. As a plan point of foot care, ‘the plan of the system,’ ‘the plan of medical history taking,’ ‘a plan to connect to self-care,’ ‘efforts toward self-care,’ ‘a plan to increase efforts to gain patient's trust,’ and ‘the plan of skills and techniques’ and so on were found. Such repliess as “lack of assistance,” “lack of time,” “lack of facilities,” and “lack of knowledge by medical staff” were stated as difficulties of foot care. “Improvement or acquisition of skills,” “staff education,” “system-making,” and so on were mentioned as future plans for foot care. The results revealed the present conditions and issues foot care in Japan, and many suggestions regarding foot care by nurses were received.
