Description

This paper reexamines "Easy Japanese" from the viewpoint of actual commnuication, and makes the following two assertions:

(a) "Easy Japanese" is not an issue of what type of Japanese should be taught to non-native learners. Rather, it is a matter of what sort of Japanese should be used by natives when speaking to and writing for non-natives. Thus it is an issue of education in Japanese as a national language, rather than as a foreign language.

(b) When native speakers of Japanese speak to or write for non-native speakers, it is insufficient for them to merely aim at Easy Japanese, which has a strong tendency to be understood in linguistic aspects such as grammar and vocabulary. It is necessary to aim at"Universal Japanese Communication" focusing on the communication of information, which also involves the use of diagrams and illustrations and the selection of information to be transmitted.
