Description

This paper explores the classroom use of "Easy Japanese" for schoolchildren who require instruction in the Japanese language, examining the relationship between the children's separatesession classes for Japanese language instruction and their regular classes. I propose the use of teaching materials rewritten in Easy Japanese, used in conjunction with the original textbooks, as a way of linking these two types of classrooms. First I note current trends in curricula for the children, and then detail the principle and basic production method of producing these rewritten materials. Next I show how the children engage in these two types of classes, separate-session classes and regular classes, that make of these rewritten materials. The use of rewritten materials encourages the children's participation in regular classes on an equal footing, providing them with a valuable opportunity to restate what they have learned in their own words. The use of such rewritten materials are one way of facilitating participatory learning as special curricula are implemented in the future.
