Description

This association has used the “Manual for Abdominal Ultrasound in Cancer Screening and Health Checkups” since 2014. However, some findings do not match the items used for classification. A total of 1267 patients underwent detailed examinations in 2014 and 2015. The results of the detailed examinations were reviewed for slight pyelectasis, renal angiomyolipoma, and hepatic hemangioma with a diameter of 20 mm or more, according to the detailed examination performed for initial indications in our association. A total of 26.7% of patients required follow-up by a medical agency for slight pyelectasis, and the need to reconsider the clinical significance was indicated. One case of renal cell cancer was observed from the detailed examination results for renal angiomyolipoma, and consideration on how to interpret ultrasound findings was needed.
Twenty-five samples of hepatic hemangioma with a diameter of 20 mm or more were examined. Of the 20 samples for which results were obtained, 19 were diagnosed as a hepatic hemangioma and 1 as a hepatic cyst. Appropriate observation of the characteristic findings of hepatic hemangioma allowed us to avoid further unnecessary examinations.
On reviewing all the categories in 2014, hepatic hemangioma was observed in 72.2% of Category 4 detailed examination results of the liver. These findings indicate the need to improve scanning techniques to identify characteristic findings of hepatic hemangioma.
