Abstract

The drifting buoy with leeway effect has been released off the coast of the Tohoku region of the Pacific ocean in the fall of 2014. The behavior of the drifting buoy has been examined. The buoy after release circulates in the anticyclonic eddy formed by some seamounts and Kuroshio off the far eastern coast of Ibaraki. It moves eastward by the Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension. It veers around the Kinmei seamount which is one of the Emperor Seamount Chain, where debris flowed out by tsunami in Tohoku region had been found. We have succeeded to calculate well the leeway estimation formula from buoy movement velocity data and 10m-wind data from NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis considering the time lag between buoy movement and 10m-wind.
