Description

We have conducted grain size measurement in a lot of sites in Japan from mountainous rivers to alluvial fan rivers to meandering rivers. Through the analysis of these grain size distributions, several characteristics are revealed. In the mountainous rivers and the meandering rivers, as far as large materials are included in the bed material, the shape of grain size distribution curves are similar in the most sites. The distributions are corresponding to lognormal distribution which standard deviation is 1.2, which is assumed to be a minimum porosity according to the result of previous studies. On the other hand, in the alluvial fan rivers, unless the distribution curves are similar between the sites, the standard deviations are smaller compared to mountainous and meandering rivers. The reason is that the non-dimensional tractive force in the alluvial fan rivers are relatively small, thus the bed materials are not frequently transported, which results in the smaller standard deviations.
