Abstract
In order to mitigate traffic accidents in residential areas, speed restraint measures by lowering speed limits and/or improving urban street space designs are becoming more common now. However, few quantitative analyses have been carried on the basis of actual data from wider areas. Thus in this paper, the authors try to clarify the relationship between driving speeds as well as street and street-side charateristics by utilizing probe vehicle data collected on urban streets of residential areas in Tokyo. As the result, it is found that wider street and direct connection with a major street tend to increase the driing speeds. On the other hand, speed humps and high intersection densities are found to be effective to reduce the driving speeds. This paper identifies the possibility of restricting driving speed through the improvment of street space.
