Description

We herein review the recent clinical trials of using Yokukansan, one of the traditional Japanese Kampo medicines, to treat the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The results of the trials showed that Yokukansan is effective to treat the BPSD associated with many kinds of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson’s disease with dementia, as well as to improve the activities of daily living and cognitive functions of these patients. The mechanisms of action of Yokukansan are now being investigated by many researchers in Japan. So far, Yokukansan has been shown to have effects on both the serotonergic and glutamatergic systems. We hope that Yokukansan can eventually be used in other countries around the world, and that it might also have applications for mild cognitive impairment and other types of dementia, including argyrophilic grain dementia and senile dementia of the neurofibrillary tangle type, for which there are currently no therapeutic options.
