Description
In Japan, local municipalities collect PET bottles from households. The quality of collected PET bottles depends on their condition and impurities. This study investigated collected PET bottles according to 16 categories focusing on uncapping, label peeling, bottle cleaning, and bottle compression in 6 local municipalities. 70 to 90% of bottles were uncapped. In some cases, local rule of PET bottle collection had significant impact on people behaviors. Although bottle pretreatment (uncapping, label peeling, bottle cleaning, and bottle compression) gives psychological resistance to people and thus reduce motivation to do so, clearly different results appeared. When we focused on capped bottles, following pretreatment were not completed with the increase of psychological resistance. In contrast, following pretreatment were completed more with the increase of psychological resistance in the case of uncapped bottles. This suggests that uncapping might be a psychological trigger to induce following pretreatment. If we can promote uncapping, it might also promote following pretreatment.
