Description

A plotting position formula assigns the probability of non-exceedance to the ranks of hydrological raw data. Since Cunnane reviewed and reorganized the formulae more than 30 years ago, many other studies have followed. None of them emerged as a definitive one, however, and today a number of plotting methods are used concurrently. Against this background, this paper reports on our examination of what constitutes a suitable plotting position formula for the Gumbel distribution, the log normal distribution and generalized extreme value distribution.
