Description

The purpose of this study was to clarify the structure of nursing competence and related factors in end-of-life service in nursing homes in order to confirm construct validity using structural equation modeling. To this end, questionnaires were sent to 396 nurses providing end-of-life care in nursing homes, and 154 responses were received. Exploratory factor analysis and covariance structure analysis were performed on the results.
The outcomes showed that nursing competence in end-of-life service in nursing homes involved five factors in particular:reflections on nursing care after death, respect by medical management for end-of-life wishes, collaboration for a peaceful passing, management and preparations for prediction of death, and care for individual end-of-life scenarios. The results also showed consideration of a further 21 items.
The goodness of fit observed in confirmatory factor analysis based on structural equation modeling indicated the permissible range and the construct validity of nursing competence in end-of-life service in nursing homes.
