Description

A method for quantitatively analyzing eye movement abnormalities caused by various diseases and disorders is reported. Using an optical measurement protocol that used the scleral reflection method, a new system was introduced to measure the ocular movements. A crystal oscillator was used to determine the target motion and the reference time for digitization. The obtained data were therefore highly precise and reproducible as a result.
Measurement of the smooth pursuit of eye movement was carried out by presenting a constantly rotating target. From Fourier transformation of the eye movement waveform, the frequency components were obtained and a coefficient to evaluate eye movement abnormality was proposed and we examined its effects.
When the visual target speed was 20 to 30 degrees/sec, a healthy subject exhibited good followability of the eyeball with the sight line moving with the target. When the target moved faster than this, there was an increase in saccadic eye movement and when it was slower, there was increased micro eye movement. For investigating visual target movement, a circular motion index of a constant period was suitable for feature extraction of the eye movement system.
