Abstract

This essay examines the reasons why the famous poem “Amenimo Makezu” (Unbeaten By Rain) has been regarded to be central in Miyazawa Kenji's oeuvres by focusing on the nature of the literary culture of the period and on the re-organization of the literary values that took place during the period of National Mobilization. The second issue of “Shiika Yokusan” (The Collection of Imperial Poetry) and Kano Ashihei's “Utsukushiki Chizu” (A Beautiful Map) find the values of the poem in its “private qualities” and “amateurishness.” These were the new standards of literary values after “amateur writings,” represented by “Houkoku Bungaku” (reportage literature), became popular. It was believed that the new genre possessed such high literary merits that could not be attained by professional writers. It was such trends in the literary culture that gave “Amenimo Makezu” a special privileged status and they later made Miyazawa Kenji the object of wide acclaim during National Mobilization.
