Abstract

In the context of arranging the chapters in the three volumes of Makuranososhi, the episode of "Onuba no Taifu no Myobu," included in the group of tales constructed around poems, centering on the poems composed by the empress, Teishi, has been read as an episode conceived and written on the emotional base that conveyed sympathy for Teishi, against the historical background of her misfortune later in her life. In this paper, however, I attempt to analyze this episode from the viewpoint of interpreting individual chapters as distinct entities, in order to point out that the descriptive adjective, "Aware", rarely applied to Teishi elsewhere, is used in essence as an expression of admiration, not of sympathy for her misfortune. I have also contemplated the process in which the addition of the last sentence creates a delay between the meaning perceived at the time of experience and the meaning recaptured at the time of writing, thus bringing a multi-layered meaning to this episode.
