Description
Like many other literary works of the mid-Heian Period, the age of the rapid development of economic and cultural communications between Japan and China, Makura-no-soshi was greatly influenced by Chinese literature. Although Sei-shoNagon had only a superficial and abstract idea about China, she as a court lady had been familiar with Chinese writings since her childhood. Indeed, it is not so hard to find in her work phrases and images cited from classical Chinese literature. The author's positive appropriation of Chinese writings shows her efforts to make negotiations between her own and the other culture.
